IF SEEING IS BELIEVING...THEN WHAT IS HEARING? Kathryn Marshall Start: 01/05 11:00 UTC+1 Forcalquier, France A participatory audio performance based on the practice of Yoga Nidra (Yogic Sleep) and various hypnosis techniques. The listener is guided into a deep state of relaxation where their internal and external perception of their body and the space it occupies is put into question.

Yoga Nidra, one of the oldest and most restorative practices, allows the body to sleep while the mind stays awake and alert to suggestions. The listener remains completely in control, unlike other hypnosis techniques that leave the participant vulnerable and exposed. For this performance my voice will propose a relocation of consciousness, from the mind to a specific part of the body, or outside of the body entirely. Through careful word choice, cultural references, wry commentary, and live musical (de)composition, IF SEEING IS BELIEVING...THEN WHAT IS HEARING? defines the physical limits of the body only to then psychologically breach them. The anatomy of the cosmos is not so different from our own, when push comes to shove...
To participate in this piece, audience members are asked to arrive equipped with stereo headphones (noise-canceling, if possible), an eye-mask or something to completely cover the eyes, and to find a place where they can lie down and not be disturbed for the duration of the piece (45 minutes). A blanket, warm socks, and a pillow are recommended. |
