Velvet bottom (part of the Ubley Warren nature reserve) has been mined for centuries, initially by the Romans for lead. The landscape is undulating, or "gruffy" to use the local term and is home to rare lead-tolerant plants like the delightfully names dwarf mouse ear. Expect to hear grassland bird species like stonechats, larks and tree pippits. It's a way away from any houses or main roads so should be quiet. Soundcasting from this site will be Caitlin, a radio producer and field recording enthusiast (and maybe her mum if she can make it up before sparrow fart)

The stream will listen to birds, wind, distant human activity, infrastructures and other subtle presences as the site turns into daylight.
It is prepared by Dominique Leroy and Jef Rolez, together with artists and volunteers present at Kerminy, and may include light performative gestures or vocalisations in dialogue with the surrounding sonic ecology.

The recording was made in the Pan-Himalayan region, at Yulong Snow Mountain in Lijiang, Yunnan, China. This is a 3000meters high-altitude wetland, facing the mountain, situated between an ancient village and the expanding city.
It was once a golf course. As awareness around ecology and environmental care grew, the course was closed, and the land was allowed to rewild ten years ago. Gradually, the trees returned, the forest came back, and with it, the birds. This became the first rewilded site in the area.
The recording I’m sharing was made toward the end of the Reveil 13 broadcast, after sunrise had already passed.
