I live very close to Hangzhou botanical garden and I often take a walk in the garden in late afternoons. The garden in the afternoon is more of a tourist site, nothing different from other places around the West Lake of Hangzhou. Once, I went to the garden in an early morning for sound recording (as you hear on this website). It occurred to me that the garden is a regular place for older people to exercise and socialize. They practiced Tai Chi, dance, singing, chess games, and Majiong, starting around 5am till 10am.
Field recordings allow me to get more entries to the understanding of Hangzhou. Traffic noises become surprisingly loud after 9pm along the West lake because no trucks are allowed to cross tourist areas in daytime. I get more attached to the city through field recording for the therapeutic soundscape in bamboo forests. The city's nostalgic cultural heritage, natural scenery along with urban commercialization offers rich possibilities for a creative and reflexive sonorous presence.
