Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve's live audio stream allows remote users to enjoy the sounds of a rich variety of birds and other wildlife found in Northern California's oak woodland and riparian habitats.
The audio streaming setup consists of a phantom-powered River Forks Compression Zone Microphone (CZM) connected via XLR cable to an Applied Research and Technology (ART) tube microphone preamplifier with a SovTek 12ax7 after-market vacuum tube. A Barix Instreamer analog-to-digital encoder, sampling at 32 KHz, streams MPEG-1, audio layer III (MP3) over internet protocol (IP) to Locus Sonus. The Instreamer uplinks to the internet via a Ruckus 7762 dual-radio A/N access point, part of the Preserve's outdoor wireless mesh network. Solar panels and sealed gel batteries currently provide power. Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve is located near Stanford University's campus in the eastern foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains. The Preserve encompasses remarkable geologic, topographic, and biotic diversity within its 481 hectares (1,189 acres) and provides a natural laboratory for researchers from all over the world, educational experiences to students and docent-led visitors, and refuge to native plants and animals. |
