The Cassia Wildlife Corridor is a natural area that runs through the middle of Coolum Beach.
It provides important habitat and refuge for a wide variety of native animals and insects, including flying foxes.
Even though it’s surrounded by houses, the corridor plays a vital role in supporting local biodiversity and helping wildlife stay connected to surrounding habitats.

Coolum Beach is located on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, and is part of the Sunshine Coast UNESCO Biosphere. This area is becoming increasingly populated, and green spaces play an important role in supporting local biodiversity in these increasingly urbanised environments.
Over 40 years ago, the original plan for the site (Cassia Wildlife Corridor) was a concrete stormwater drain. However, the residents fought against this, and the area was instead left in its natural state, allowing it to become a healthy corridor for native wildlife.
Despite being surrounded by suburban development, the corridor provides essential habitat and refuge for a wide variety of animals and insects, including flying foxes, owls, eagles, hawks, parrots, frogs, and pollinators like native bees and butterflies, as well as marsupials such as possums and sugar gliders.
Streaming will be mother-and-daughter team Bernice Wood and Arwen Brown (11), who live in the area and document its inhabitants through photography and audio. Bernice is currently a student at the University of the Sunshine Coast, completing her Master’s in Creative Arts with a focus on Creative Ecology.
An iNaturalist page has been started to record the importance of this habitat .
