The Fauler See is a small lake surrounded by woodland that has been a nature reserve in Berlin since 1933. A good variety of birds can be heard, both woodland and wetland species. The Berlin city roar is always in the background.
The lake is located in the district of Weißensee on the border with the district of Lichtenberg, in the centre of the "Fauler See" public park and nature reserve (NSG) of the same name. This nature reserve, which was protected in 1933, has a total area of 24.2 hectares and is enclosed on all sides. The eponymous lake covers around 3.6 hectares, as well as other wet meadows, hiking trails and children's playgrounds.[2] The lake itself is a dead-ice lake without a natural inlet. Today, rainwater drains end in Fauler See, which feed relatively unclean water. To prevent the lake from silting up, reeds are removed at regular intervals and silt is dredged. A ditch system is connected to the Panke and forms a partial drain. The groundwater table in the area of the Faulen See park is 20-30 metres deep in a confined main aquifer. The lake is home to moorhens, mallards, teals and songbirds, among others. A total of around 40 breeding bird species were counted during observations in the 1980s. translated from https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fauler_See
