Ashmore Wood George Ridgway
Latitude: +50.948656444735654°
Ashmore Woods is a fragment of a once much larger hunting forest that covered the chalk high grounds and downlands of the Cranborne Chase.
|
This part of the wood has been coppiced for over a 1000 years, with Hazels and Oaks covering the north west sections. Extensive swathes of Bluebells cover on the forest floor alongwith wild garlic and wood anemone. The land is now managed by the Forestry commission with plantations of douglas fir to the south within surrounding beech plantations which were planted in the 1940s-1950s. A small area of old growth remains along the north edge. The woods are home to variety of bird, bat and butterfly species including Nightingales.
