Stream box sited on the windowsill overlooking an inner-city terraced garden in SE London with this cherry tree, threaded through with a clematis armandii and simple white dog rose creating an airy fastness, a haven to the many birds that visit the garden in search of food, a nesting site, shade or shelter. All the delight in birdsong is overshadowed and, at times, drowned out by the planes overflying to Heathrow. Indeed, they are often the first sound of the day, even before the blackbird announces that dawn is breaking. Even in lockdown.
