WaterStreamsDawn is an experiment in early morning sonification of water in the Czech Highlands. Traditionally a water winning area, over the last years due to climate change and agricultural mismanagement, it is obvious it is slowly drying out, with all negative effects for ecological diversity in the area. With a couple of DIY devices we try to listen to activities underwater, while wondering what the changes are during sunrise. In addition we have some open microphones above waterlevel. The live stream is shared by sound artists, local creative inhabitants and other rare species...

1 ear above the stream, 2 strange ears under water
Some Idea Briefly, we are worried about water, how we use and destroy it, how it is being reduced also in the arts to a theme, or project, or material. Around us we see the highlands drying out, agriculture neglecting and polluting it, people wasting it. Maybe a deeper understanding of water as a necessary environmental thing and a creative approach can make us care more in our daily life as well. And make us creative differently. Water Strings Dawn Over the last years, we have been listening to fish, insects, streams/waves, and more unidentifyable noises underwater using hydrophones. When we were discussing how to make a new kind of soundboard based on new ecological and technological possibilities, and one of the things that came to mind was the use of strings and their natural resonances in the light of environmental sensing. Strings that resonate with the chaotic water streams might provide interesting sonifications with time-based variations. How How How Usually microphones work with membranes, and we are having a couple of hydrophones that can record underwater. But then if you think again about sonifying the water streams, which can appear very low in frequency and are definitely chaotic in pressure, so aren't there other possibilities? Would it make sense to replace the membranes with strings of different tensions to bring out the frequencies generated by the unpredicatable and varying water stream pressures? A String A Stick A Geofón etc Simplicity first: we took a 125cm long 4cm diameter cherry tree branch, attached a 1m piano string (see Pythagoras haha) to a couple of screws (to adjust the tension), and a LOM geofón to catch the vibrations. Next we put it horizontally in the stream, 90˚ to the direction of the stream. And.. we were amazed by the a magical sound, played by the water stream, changing frequencies with the position of the string in the water and its tuning! At Sunrise For Réveil we want to combine our Skiffle String Stick with a 'normal' hydrophone and an electret microphone. At civic sunrise, we stream to the multiplace server, and listen to the experiment together with the birds and other animals either waking up, or getting some rest. Like we said here above (water): 1 ear above the stream, 2 ears under water. Stay Strangely Tuned (For More Later).
