hydrophile 5 is a hydrophone transmitting from inside the urban river Amstel since June 2023. Berlage brug is located in the South of Amsterdam.
hydrophile 5 was one of 8 hydrophiles and part of a larger network of streamers transmitting from above and below the waterways in and around Amsterdam, all connected to the same cycle of water (drinking, sewage, surface water).
Its location is amidst a very busy traffic node in the South of Amsterdam with thousands of cyclists riding over the bridge every day. We can witness the sounds of trams and boat motors wizzing past the hydrophone. The sunnier the more boats. In the early morning and early evening hours we hear rowers and sometimes a choir ( rowers' choir?) singing under the bridge.

Hydrophile 5 was part of hydroFiles an artistic research project in collaboration with Waternet, ArtEZ University and Zone2source Gallery.

The stream is operated with the care of engineers and hydrochemists from the Waternet, a joint organization in Amsterdam and the surrounding area responsible for all water-related activities, including drinking water production and distribution, sewerage, and wastewater treatment. They are the only water company in the Netherlands that manages the entire water cycle. Waternet works for the municipality of Amsterdam and the Regional Public Water Authority Amstel, Gooi en Vecht.
