Because the allotment is quite wild the biodiversity is high. It functions as a refugium for plants and animals who do not stand a chance in the surrounding areas dominated by high speed traffic, infrastructure, agro-industrial desertification and urbanisation. The allotment garden community borders at the Amsterdam-Rijn canal, one of the busiest ship routes in the Netherlands. At the other side are agriculture and recreational areas that suffer from artificially maintained low groundwater level and excessive nitrogen deposit.
