The forest is a Special Site of Scientific Interest (SSSI). It is primarily known for the ancient oaks trees (some go back 1000 years), also beech, sweet chestnut, sycamore, maple, silver birch, downy birch, rowan and willows. It is currently bluebell season and the woodland is carpeted with flowers.
