The location is natural deciduous woodland, the site of an ancient orchard beneath the Old Town of Briançon. It overlooks the Parc de la Schappe and River Durance in Briançon. The river, audible in the background, passes through a narrow gorge immediately beforehand and in May the river level is increased by meltwater from the nearby mountains, which remain snowcapped until early summer.
