Villa Torlonia, Technotown, Rome (IT) Raffaele Mariconte, Gianluca Ferranti
Latitude: +41.9138332°
This year, we will be broadcasting from one of the most iconic historic villas in the heart of Rome: Villa Torlonia. The exact transmission point will be the balcony of one of the villa’s most prestigious buildings—a small medieval-style palace that today hosts Technotown, Rome’s creative science hub (hub della scienza creativa, dell'Assessorato alla Scuola, Formazione e Lavoro di Roma Capitale, con l’organizzazione e la cura scientifica di Zètema Progetto Cultura). Technotown is a unique space where technique and technology become tools for creative expression also through activities dedicated to sound. Villa Torlonia is one of Rome’s many green spaces, playing a key role in softening the environmental impact of the city. Its rich and varied plant life reflects the eclectic spirit of the Torlonia princes. Today, the park is home to approximately 284 plant species, contributing to its remarkable biodiversity. This sound design project is a point of connection and collaboration between Technotown and Liminaria. Raffaele Mariconte and Gianluca Ferranti have already produced several nighttime recordings of the villa as part of a project on museum inclusiveness, dedicated to visually impaired and blind individuals.

Raffaele Mariconte and Gianluca Ferranti have already produced several nighttime recordings of the villa as part of a project on museum inclusiveness, dedicated to visually impaired and blind individuals. For this particular occasion, a binaural microphone recording system will be used. Streamers Bio: Raffaele Mariconte is a researcher and acoustic engineer working in a number of areas related to sound: noise pollution and the effects of noise on humans, acoustic and sound design, sonic branding, sonification, soundscape, field recording, aural architecture and acoustic ecology. Gianluca Ferranti is a sound designer, electronic musician, and music educator. He has always been passionate about technology applied to music and the relationship between musical composition and soundscapes. He collaborates with various organizations, creating music, digital environments, and sound effects tailored to different contexts. At Technotown, Rome’s creative science hub, he leads creative workshops focused on sound design, digital music, the construction of electroacoustic instruments, and podcast editing. His current field of interest is ambient music, particularly as it relates to specific and immersive environments. Liminaria project: Liminaria is a fieldwork-based research project aimed at developing sustainable cultural, social and economic networks in different rural areas in Italy. The project unfolds through the planning and execution of “actions” on the territory, all carried out in joint collaboration with local communities. In this way, it seeks to test out new models of intervention in rural areas, thus reconfiguring rural territories as dynamic places while revaluing local resources. The “actions” carried out within the framework of the project range from cultural events and performances (including a sound-art residency programme for international artists) to mid-term coworking projects with local schools, from network optimisation and new-media related initiatives, to hybrid and experimental research protocols. Technotown: Since 2006, Technotown has been hosted inside the distinctive Medieval-style Cottage of Villa Torlonia. It is Rome’s hub for creative science, a space for public engagement where science, technique, and technology come together to create an inclusive and eco-friendly environment. Here, visitors can explore the world of research and innovation, express their potential, exchange ideas, and collaborate on creative solutions.
