To the north, the St. Lawrence River valley, 20 miles of flat to the international border between the United States and Canada. The farm is tucked between the Little River and CR-27, a county road. There are several interacting microsystems: old field, pasture, marshes, woods with stands of sugar maples, beech, and yellow birch, and stands of white pines, cedars, and hemlocks. In addition to the horses and their owners, the 200-year-old farm has traffic: songbirds, geese, eagles, owls, chorus frogs, crickets, deer, bobcat, bear, muskrats, beavers. The road offers its own array of rural sounds and traffic. The vehicles are varied, from motorcycles, manure trucks, and farm vehicles, to the occasional emergency vehicles with sirens and horse-drawn Amish carts.
