A soundwalk through the flower market, Kolkata.

A soundwalk through the flower market beside the 81-year-old Howrah Bridge, one of the busiest bridges in India with an estimated daily traffic of 100,000 vehicles and 150,000 pedestrians. The place offers a vibrant symphony of sounds encompassing a rich mix of several natural and man-made elements. The market is alive with the chatter of vendors and customers engaged in lively conversations, a constant buzz of the traffic over the bridge, and bird calls. The interesting fact is to experience the gradual change in the soundscape as one walks through the market towards Mullick Ghat, a nearby ghat located on the bank of the river Hooghly. The soundscape at this juncture is a combination of chanting of prayers in the temple, bell rings, different bird calls, fluttering of wings of the pigeons, a constant hum from the motor boats, announcements from the Howrah Railway Station situated on the other side of the river opposite to the ghat, water waves hitting the bank of the river, people taking an early morning bath!!
