The Flag River estuary is one of several wetlands that characterize the south shore of Lake Superior in Wisconsin. The reveil broadcast comes from the Michelle Wheeler memorial wetland, a recently completed restoration set within the Port Wing Boreal Forest State Natural Area, itself a small slice of the white pine forest that dominated the area prior to intensive logging in the 19th and early 20th century. The dawn chorus soundscape is characterized by migratory and resident birds including waterfowl, sandhill cranes, eagles and gulls. The historic town of Port Wing is also an active recreational and commercial fishing hub and we can also expect to hear sounds of activity as fishermen arrive to begin their day on Lake Superior.
