Ears In Space is an organization focused on connecting citizen science, broadcast and landscape art, and conservation efforts in rural Massachusetts USA. Ears In Space HQ is based on a wooded slope surrounded by hemlock, red maple, white pine, birch, and oak trees. Common sounds include the hammering of Red-bellied woodpeckers and the calls of black-capped chickadee, tufted titmouse, pine warbler, american goldfinch, american robin, yellow-bellied sapsucker, red crossbill, carolina wren, and (at night) barred owl. Recently, bats have started to emerge at night to feast on many species of moths. Most of the forests in Massachusetts are less than 300 years old. The state was clearcut by colonists who regarded wood, land, and wildlife as a bottomless commodity, the same approach that had already overcut many of England’s forests. But the people already inhabiting Massachusetts had been there since long before that, at least 10,000 years. The last glaciers left Massachusetts around 6000 years before that. So the trees are new; this house, at 15 years, is also new, by house standards; yet the defunct satellite dish, the same age as the house, is old, replaced by fiber optic network. https://earsin.space |
