Local residents of Laurieton, NSW, enjoy the overflow of birds from North Brother Mountain (Dooragan National Park). Kookaburras, pigeons and numerous parrots, just to name a few, greet the day in the large eucalypts scattered through the streets.

Streaming from the beautiful town of Laurieton within the Camden Haven, residents wake to Australian birds greeting the rising sun. This small town sits beneath North Brother Mountain (Dooragan National Park) and is one of the areas that edges the Camden Haven River inlet. The region has a strong environmental history, with timber once a primary industry; since the late 1800s, five mills operated along the estuary banks. Logging continued for many years and even extended onto the mountain, with Blackbutt (Eucalyptus pilularis) a key target species due to its strength and durability. North Brother Mountain (Dooragan National Park) became part of a national park in 1997 and now helps protect the remaining old-growth forests, providing important habitat for the many bird species heard across the area today—from kookaburras and cockatoos to lorikeets, rosellas, and birds of prey that shape the local dawn chorus. |
