The Ravenglass estuary is an acoustically diverse and transformative area that sits across two sites of special scientific interest and contains a majestic array of natural and industrial sounds, twenty-four hours a day.

Stream box built by RL Wilson and Full of Noises.
Largely protected by sand dunes from the prevailing sou’westerlies, the Ravenglass estuary hosts a dynamic multi-species entanglement, that includes curlew, little egret, the rare and elusive natterjack toad, and the common and overabundant tourist.

The Cumbrian coastal setting is rich in both its sonic properties and its biodiversity where huge migratory and resident bird populations have ample food and shelter. Its tidal mouth is fed by saltwater from the Irish sea, and freshwater from its three rivers - the Esk, Irt, and Mite - collected from the Lake Districts' highest mountains.

The dynamic ecosystem is also surrounded by various nuclear and military-industrialised sites, which are also significantly present, contributing to the multiple and complex sonic activators audible through the stream.
