Spreading in vast, magnificent colonies, the splendid Diplopterygium glaucum (里白蕨) has claimed both the highlands and the lowlands. Its uncurling fronds transform the mountainside into a surreal, alien terrain; witnessing this prehistoric display is the very purpose of our journey. Nearby, we could encounter more fern families, such as Lepisorus thunbergianus (瓦韦), clinging to weathered pine trunks, a name carring a nod to its history of living quietly under thatched eaves, barely noticed.
Along spring hikes upon the Baishi Brook (白石溪), one of the eighteen streams on Cangshan Mountain (苍山), local flora exhibit diversity in their name origins, growing seasons, medicinal uses, subtle fragrances, unique characters and more.
