Briançon is located in the high Alps, near the Italian border. It is built on a plateau centred on the confluence of the Durance, Guisane and Cerveyrette rivers. The recording location, near the hamlet of Font Christiane, is a wooded escarpment beneath the Fort des Trois Têtes, one of the ‘Fortifications of Vauban’ UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Nearby an irrigation canal, first cut at the end of the Middle Ages, brings water to the settlement from higher up the Cerveyrette valley, its meandering route following the contours of the steep valley wall. |
