Mic located on the roof of a private house, at the edge of Aluva.
The soundscape traverses a mixed neighbourhood of Aluva, between a spreading suburbia and mixed agriculture, patches of woodland and rubber plantations which all provide a mixed habitat for a variety of life. There are woodland, river and coastal birds sharing the wooded hills, with an abundance of plant, animal and insect life multiplying and thriving in the humid subtropical conditions.
Collaboration of InspiralLondon, EinAE and soundcamp arts cooperative.
Aluva, Kerala, South India
The microphone is located near to Christava Mahilalayam School and above the Periyar (Periwar) River which is the longest river and has the largest discharge potential in the Indian state of Kerala. It is one of the few perennial rivers in the region and provides drinking and other water for several major towns.  Close by, at a confluence of the river system is the Aluva Mahadeva Hindu Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, situated on the southern bank of the Periyar River at Aluva Manappuram, a suburb of Kochi in Ernakulam District, Kerala. The temple complex occupies a unique sandbank formation where the River bifurcates into the Mangalappuzha and Periyar tributaries, creating a naturally enclosed and serene riverside setting accessible primarily by foot or boat. The soundscape reflects this semi-urban rural confluence and the competing voices and sounds of overlapping cultures both human and non-human.   Kerala is located in a semi-tropical zone and ordinarily the weather patterns follow regularly summer/monsoon/winter. During two concentrated periods of monsoon the rains refill the natural water systems. It has a generally humid equatorial tropical climate, located between the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats. Recently this pattern has been disrupted and water shortages present a new and pressing challenge for the region. This soundscape traverses a mixed neighbourhood of Aluva, between a spreading suburbia - with temples, churches and mosques all competing for attention. Alongside mixed agriculture, artisan and light industry, broken up with plots of woodland and rubber plantations. This all provides a mixed habitat. There are woodland, rare river and coastal birds that roost and share in the wooded hills, hidden in and resonant with an abundance of plant, animal and insect life.
The livestream was made possible with the support of soundcamp cooperative, InspiralLondon CIC and key Indian partners of Experiments in Art and Ecology (EinAE).
