The Veluwe is a forest-rich ridge of hills in the province of Gelderland in the Netherlands. The Veluwe features many different landscapes, including woodland, heath, some small lakes and Europe's largest sand drifts. It was formed by the Saalian glacial during the Pleistocene epoch, some 200,000 years ago. There are both coniferous and deciduous forests on the Veluwe, and some 500 different plant species can be found. The region is also home to many different species of animals, such as wild boar, several species of deer, several species of snakes, pine martens, foxes, and badgers. Furthermore, the bird raven was successfully reintroduced, and the introduced Reeves's muntjac and mouflon can sometimes be seen. Since 2019 the wolf is officially back. The Veluwe is a tourist destination, especially for Dutch people wanting to go on a short vacation in their own country. Most of them stay on campsites and bungalow parks on the outskirts of the natural area, which leaves plenty of space for the enthusiast who wishes to wander or cycle through nature and enjoy the sights and sounds of the aforementioned trees, plants and the animals. (Mostly sourced from Wikipedia.) Erwin Elling now and then hides his Streambox in the area, so friends around the world can enjoy the relaxing sounds of the forest. He also likes to combine his setup with a recorder, AI automated bird recognition software, etcetera and is actively exploring its further application. A recent example is this work in progress: De Groene Zendpiraat (The Green Radio Pirate) that features this stream alongside the birds that are detected on it. |
